William Guthrie (1620-1665) is best known for this book on Christian assurance. He gives tests by which someone may know with certainty that he is a Christian. He exposes the false ideas of religious hypocrites whilst at the same time bringing encouragement to those who are genuine to hope that their interest in the saving work of Christ is real. A second part shows how to approach Christ for salvation and is a clear exposition of the Gospel.
First published in 1658, this edition has been completely re-typeset for issue as an eBook. The cover picture shows Fenwick Kirk, near Kilmarnock, where Guthrie served for over 20 years, seeing many converted under his ministry.

The problem with this book isn't that it's written in an older style of writing. I can read other Puritans just fine. There were people who lived during his time who wrote very clearly, and they're still easy and clear to read today. Reading Guthrie is like reading a legal document. His writing is mentally herky-jerky. He doesn't have a smooth flow of thought. There are a few points where he writes clearly, and those parts are very good.

The Christian Great Interest edition by William Guthrie Mark Riedel Thomas Chalmers Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Brand new book, quick ship.
I am a big fan of puritan literature. This is a good book.
good book to read
Such a potent and in depth description of what a true Christian would look like and think like. So helpful!
Read it (almost completely twice in a row). First time through was very good, the next time through very good. Once one can get beyond some of the old English you'll be well on your way to see how Guthrie attempts to leave no stone unturned that might entire the readers inquiry.
Christian's Great Interest by William Guthrie, is a bit hard to read. It's readable but written in how the early Puritans spoke. But the content is awesome! It's Biblically based, solely on the Word of God. I am enjoying reading and learning!
This is a very important book by the brother of one of the Covenanter martyrs. (read Fair Sunshine, by Jock Purves) The book threw me for a loop some years ago on what it means to be a Christian... The Puritans knew their Bible, and we ought to listen to them, and search the Scriptures to see if these things be so!
I have yet to see if there are a lot of errors in this version of it though... I hope not. I have the paperback by Banner of Truth.
