Psychologist Dr. Emily Taylor seemed to have it all-she's thin, attractive, happily married with children, with a successful therapy practice and writing career-when she is interviewed on a major talk show to discuss her bestseller, Forgotten Intimacy. Novelist Jan Yager explores how success catapults Emily on a food binge. As her weight climbs over 200, Emily realizes she has to deal with the underlying causes to the compulsive overeating that she battles. This uplifting novel will forever impact how you view your own or someone else's weight-related challenges.

As a clinical psychologist, I appreciate and applaud the author's believable portrayal of the types of issues a sexually abused woman may face. Yager successfully wove academic, theoretical, clinical, and statisticalinformation into her narrative. I think this would be an excellent and compelling book for graduate students in psychology to read and discuss.
However, I found the dialogue incredibly irritating and unrealistic. Likewise, characters besides the main character were one dimensional and completely unbelievable (who would speak the way the mother speaks?). Some plot points were far fetched and trite. I also found the book confusing to read at times, as events occurred without any context or introduction -- the setting often jumped unexpectedly.
I did not enjoy this book at all as a pleasure read, but I would have found it to be an enjoyable and effective learning tool as a doctoral student!

The Pretty One Jan Yager 9781889262710 Books Reviews
Dr. Yager's novel is wise, funny, and most of all - an inspiration to all of us who have struggled with behaviors we don't understand or desire until we make the journey. Emily makes the journey for us and gives a blueprint for others to follow. Definitely a great read with a heart wrenching message.
After reading the issues that plague Emily to the point of overeating, her determination to overcome them motivated me in my own quest for self-improvement. The amount of research and time Dr. Jan Yager put into this novel is appreciated the most when Emily finally reaches a state of harmony for both body and mind. I highly recommend The Pretty One to anyone who struggles with addictions or wishes to develop positive habits.
The Pretty One is a compassionate and compelling novel. It deals with some of the most common and yet most brutal difficulties women face. It is a book from which all readers, men and women, regardless of shape, size, age, or personal history, can learn. Emily's story is one of both struggle and growth, one which everyone can relate to because it revolves around crucial elements of identity food and physical image; self control; and self love. This novel is an absolutely necessary read for anyone who suffers from weight management, especially compulsive overeating, or self-esteem issues, that is written by an experienced and caring professional. This story calls for change; it inspires readers to reach their full potential and to delve deeper into their own struggles and triumphs.
I love Jan Yager's business books but didn't know what to expect when I got her novel. I was highly pleased as her main character Emily immediately captured my heart. Yager walks us through Emily's emotions from her success to her repressed memories of sexual abuse from her older brother. When Emily finally faces her demons and takes charge of her life, she steadily loses her unwanted weight and returns to her beautiful and successful self--the real Emily.
Although I have never had a weight problem and thankfully never suffered sexual abuse, I had a friend who did. Being young, I couldn't quite grasp what my friend was going through with her food addiction. This book gave me such insight into her problem. I only wish that I could have read this book back then so that I could have better understood my friend and maybe I could have helped her.
